Cut-Up Studio is a web-based creative tool that reimagines the cut-up method for the digital age. Inspired by the literary experiments of William S. Burroughs and Tristan Tzara, the application explores how randomness, language, and visual design can intersect to generate entirely new forms of expression.
The platform transforms text into abstract compositions by algorithmically slicing, shuffling, and reassembling written content. Users can fragment any text by word, phrase, sentence, or visual strip and then recombine those elements through seeded randomness, a system that enables infinite variation with exact reproducibility. The results can resemble typographic posters, digital broadsides, or experimental zines that challenge conventional reading patterns.
Cut-Up Studio offers seven layout modes that range from structured multi-column grids to expressive visual arrangements. These include compositions reminiscent of concrete poetry, diagonal cascades, ragged alignments, and scattered text fields that dissolve linear meaning into rhythm and form.
Beyond text, the Studio supports layered visual experimentation. Users can combine multiple images with adjustable opacity, scale, and blend modes, merging typography with geometric, photographic, or abstract textures. The tool’s flexibility makes it equally suited for literary art, digital collage, and modern design applications such as social media graphics and poster compositions.
Cut-Up Studio’s technical depth mirrors its creative range. Text can be entered directly, extracted from PDFs through built-in OCR, or drawn from sample literary sources. Typography controls include font selection, size, color, margins, and column count, with Instrument Sans as the clean, modern default. Each session’s random seed preserves the composition’s unique structure for future refinement or reproduction.
The platform connects seamlessly with Visual Bounty’s curated gallery, allowing users to access a library of textures, patterns, and image fragments for collage-based exploration. Finished projects can be exported as high-resolution PNGs in formats optimized for Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, and print, or saved as raw text for reuse and remixing.
A public gallery extends the creative process beyond the individual. Users can choose to share their work, browse others’ projects, or load any public piece into the studio for new iterations. Each shared composition retains its metadata, documenting the creative variables behind it and encouraging open-ended collaboration.
